"Popping the Question"
Jeanine and I have been together for just over six years now. We've enjoyed the good and the bad during that time. We're as much in love now, as we ever were. Sometimes I think, even more so. When I made the decision to ask her to marry me, I wanted it to be something special.
In December I had a meeting for work up in Maine. The location was the Black Point Inn. I was so amazed with this hotel. Its out on a point, almost surrounded by ocean. I was there for two days and new that this was a place that I wanted Jeanine to see. We both love the water and the views there were so amazing. So I began my planning.
I started looking for a ring. I knew she wanted something nice and having seen so many diamond engagement rings, I was getting a bit frustrated. They all look the same. So I asked her what she liked and wanted, and caught on the fact that she loves Amethyst. This worked out nicely, I found a really great ring. A large amethyst center stone, with 6 smaller diamonds around it. At the same time I found a matching pendant and simply couldn't resist getting that for her as well.
I made reservations at the Black Point Inn and let her know that we'd go there just to get away from everything for a weekend. Enjoy some pampering and all that. Which I am glad to say she really looked forward to.
The night before we were going to leave we went to dinner. While we were waiting for our order I gave her the necklace and wished her a happy birthday. You can imagine my delight at the expression on her face. She loved it. Although, she's nobodies fool and she looked at me with an odd expression. "What?" I asked her..and she smiled a bit and told me that "This wasn't the jewelery I was really expecting." To which I just laughed and suggested she be more patient.
So on Friday I got our things together, and we packed up for the 2 hour drive to Maine. The Inn is just south of Portland, and lies right off the main Freeway. It was a very easy and pleasant drive. We talked, sang along with the radio, and marveled at the inability of anyone in New England to drive properly. (Ok she marveled, I complained, vehemently at times *smile*).
Once we got to the Inn we checked in and took our things to the room. The weather was overcast and a bit misty. It obscured the view of the ocean, but the whole area was just wonderful. Of course you have to remember. This was February, it was COLD! I took Jeanine up to the "Widow's Walk" which I believe at one time was a type of lookout or even warning light type room at the very top of the hotel. While the view was great, She wasn't impressed with the narrow stairs and cramped space, so we headed back downstairs.
The rest of the evening we spent having dinner, and just relaxing and enjoying the ambiance of the 1900's location. In the morning we got up and enjoyed a wonderful breakfast. If you ever want to enjoy a place just for the food, this is 5 stars in our books. She ordered the French toast, but don't be fooled. This was Pecan Encrusted French toast. I swear, I've had cheesecake that wasn't this rich.
After breakfast we went upstairs and changed into some comfortable clothes and drove into Portland. They have an Old Port district there which during the summer season is normally packed with tourists. Since we weren't there in summer, it was kin of slow. Even so we found an old book store, and picked up some antique hard bound books about histories of different periods of time in Europe. We walked around for a few hours, enjoying the small shops and certain "unique" stores.
The trip back to the hotel was interesting, as the directions for getting to and from Portland weren't very clear. We enjoyed a random driving tour of Portland on our way back. Once near the hotel we decided to try a local pizza parlor, where we enjoyed a really great meal and sat listening to the news reports about the Columbia Disaster. Sadly this event brought a sobering tone to our weekend adventure.
We went to our room and rested for awhile after lunch, then prepared for our last full dinner. She wore a lovely dress and I had my suit jacket with me. The hotel normally has a dress code for dinner, Jackets and ties for the men and appropriate dress for the women. Sometimes I wonder why its more specific for us?
As we sipped our wine and made sure I had her ring in my pocket. Then she gave me the chance I needed. She went to use the restroom. While she was away I set the ring box on the table. When she came back she looked surprised, although I know she knew it was coming. She really loved the ring. I was enjoying her reaction and looked at her and asked her to be my wife. She got a bit teary eyed, and nodded and said "Yes".
Dinner and the rest of our trip was really just a quiet wonderful relaxing time. We enjoyed the time at the Black Point Inn very much and I hope we get a chance to return sometime.
