Osric the Goldfish
When Jeanine and I first moved in together she brought along a small goldfish that was given to her by a floormate from RPI when she left school. I gave it no real thought at the time. The fish was small and the tank was tiny.
Over time he grew and grew and suffered any number of maladies. Ick on more than one occasion. Tank infestations by algi at least 5 times that threatened to blot out any light reaching the poor fish.
In time we bought and moved him into a nice big 10 gallon tank. This worked well, until the idiot fish got used to swimming through one of the tank decorations. He had finally gotten too big to do this and wedged himself tightly into it. THREE times. You try hanging on to a thrashing Goldfish that now weighs nearly a pound and is as big as your hand, while trying not to kill it by ripping its tail off as you pull it from its rock decoration.
He was a really stupid fish.
As time went on he grew older and fatter and bigger. he actually was big enough that we didn't dare put any more goldfish in with him, he'd probably eat them.
We thought he died at one point. He Lay, belly up, for about a week. (His gills kept moving so we didn't want to flush him yet) Then miraculously, he was fine again!
We'd had Osric for nearly 4 years when he finally gave in to mortality. We were getting ready to move out of state and I came home to find him not only belly up, but stiff as a board laying on the bottom of the tank. At long last the monstrous beast known as Osric had given in and died.
For a 50 cent goldfish from Wal-Mart, you have to think that was a pretty amazing life span.
