The Rats of Majecc
One of the first true pet purchases we made was to bring two rather adorable rats home to entertain and love us. Davinci and Magellan were a pair of male domestic rats that we found too adorable to ignore at our local PetSmart store.
Davinci was a beautiful golden/beige color and was the friendliest of the pair. he would spend long periods just nestled on your shoulder or in your hands and arms resting close to you. His personality was that of a quiet friend that was always there to keep you company.
Magellan, while he started out almost as pleasantly as Davinci, turned out to be a rather nasty little rat. I admit though, it really was our own fault. He had a fall when he was very young which made him very skittish of being held and played with. in time we tended to avoid him and for a rat, avoidance leads to testiness and fear. fear leads to biting, which our friend Nick found out all too well one day as he tried to feed Magellan by hand.
CHOMP
Magellan locked onto Nick like a pitbull on a prime steak. Took quite a bit of fuss to break the two loose and Nick still remembers how nasty that bite was.
Over time as the rats grew older, magellan became violent and injured Davinci severely. Injuries and age finally took Davinci away. Followed not too long after by Magellan who, it appears, died in his sleep.
If I learned anything at all from having these two rodents it is this:
- Rats REQUIRE attention and affection. if you ignore them and treat them like a cat that lives independently, you will have vicious mean little pets.
- Rats, like any rodent, tend to stink if you don't keep their cages VERY clean. if you are even moderately lazy, avoid rats as pets.
- lastly, rats can be really amazing pets if you are willing to put in the time and effort required to make the relationship work. rats get used to you, they await your arrival with baited breath and get VERy excited to see you. They also get very petulant when their needs are not being met.
